Stage four

Orderable anywhere.

The difference between a book you can buy and a book that exists is a catalogue record. This is the stage that makes yours real to everybody outside this website.

What actually happens

Four things
that make it findable.

  • An ISBN registered to a publisher

Not a printing account in your name. It is the difference between a book the trade recognises and one it does not, and it is checkable by anybody in about ten seconds.

  • Proper bibliographic metadata

Categories, keywords, description, contributor records. This is the part nobody talks about and the part that decides whether your book is ever surfaced by a search.

  • Amazon, and the wider trade

Listed and orderable, so a shop or a library can get it in for somebody who asks.

  • Listings you can check yourself

Every title on this site links to its own retail page. You should be able to do that with your own book, on the day it goes live.

What distribution
is not.

Being distributed does not mean being stocked. It means being orderable. That is a real and useful thing — it is what lets a bookshop get your book for a customer who walks in and asks — and it is not the same as a pile of your books on a table in Waterstones.

Anybody who implies otherwise is describing a bookseller's buying decision as though it were a publisher's deliverable. It is not, for us or for Penguin.

Why the metadata matters more than the marketing

A book in the wrong category competes against titles it cannot beat and is invisible in the one where it would have ranked. A book with thin keywords never surfaces at all. These are settings, they are free to get right, and getting them wrong wastes every pound spent on promotion afterwards.

That is why this stage is done carefully rather than quickly, and it is the least glamorous work in publishing.

Shelves of journals seen edge on, a wall of coloured spines.

Every title,
and where it sells.

This is the whole argument for this stage, in a form you can test rather than take our word for. Open any book and follow it through to the shop.

What our authors say

On platforms we do not own and cannot edit. Every book they are talking about went out through the route this page describes.

Distribution
questions.

It is registered to Grand as the publisher, which is what gives it standing in the trade. Your copyright is entirely separate and stays yours — see the rights page for the full position.

Make it orderable.

Send a chapter and we will tell you what publishing it properly involves.
